Inclusivity, self-awareness, and reserving judgment are key in building and protecting a learning community that is comfortable for all.

A range of perspectives and experiences bring excitement and empathy into the classroom. Absolutely zero disrespect or intolerance is welcome. Instead, we will focus on what connects us as humans. Developing self-awareness and reserving judgment are two of the greatest gifts one can give themselves and others. Everyone is welcome here no matter what ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, nationality, class, body type, or disability makes up their identity.

You can’t think your work into existence. Making art is exercise.

In my own practice, I’ve been guilty of thinking myself into submission. I find quick, low-pressure exercises a great way to relieve my brain of that tension. Most often that leads to my strongest work. My assignments vary from quick studies to in-depth projects. I use this method to build confidence and to strengthen problem solving skills, which allows for the organic development of one’s creative voice.

Ultimately, I think it is important to develop visual communication and literacy skills. Understanding those concepts at a high level is the foundation of specializing in a particular medium or practice.

Learning is a network, not a hierarchy. Information should be shared freely with enthusiasm. No genius, no gatekeepers.

I place an emphasis on peer-to-peer learning. When students begin teaching and learning from one another, they better comprehend the material and become more self-sufficient. It allows them to take agency in their own learning and works toward the benefit of the entire classroom ecosystem. After establishing a foundation of knowledge, I often defer questions to the group and assume a position of support to guide the conversation. This fosters a learning community. I believe community is the catalyst for successful creative output.

Mistakes are an integral part of learning. Risks are rewarded long-term. Growth isn’t linear.

In my courses, I encourage experimentation and risk taking. These qualities lead to personal growth and independent thinking. I evaluate risks when grading. Sometimes it is necessary to take a risk and fail in order to move forward and continue in one’s development.
